Plaza Dorrego Milonga in Jeopardy

Here's an appeal for help that's going around:

Many of you who have traveled to Buenos Aires went to Plaza Dorrego on Sunday and danced at the Milonga del Indio, the open air milonga there in the afternoon and evening.

This is a free milonga, not sponsored by anybody, but by the love of the dancers who come to Buenos Aires, and is possibly the longest running event in the city (I believe for about 20 years).

For a few months (and maybe longer), the bar, restaurant and cafe owners around the plaza have made the life of the milonga miserable. They are verbally and physically threatening the organizers, stealing or damaging equipment, etc. because they want the space for tables and chairs for the people that come to the market. El Indio, the organizer, has been fighting for the space for many years, trying to get official recognition from the city (the event is listed in all guide books, recommended by hotels and travel agents, but is not officially supported by the city government of Buenos Aires).

Please sign the petition: http://milongadelindio.weebly.com/ they need to show the support from people, dancers, visitors from all over the world that came and danced at the milonga. For many of us, it was one of the first milongas we went to when we came to Buenos Aires, and is still one of the nicest events here.

Also, he has a page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&ref=search&gid=359229282855 the info is in Spanish but will be translated to English shortly.

One last thing I wanted to share: El Indio is using this milonga to reach out to less fortunate Argentine people. The donations he collects every week are going to charities, hospital, to those in need in and around Buenos Aires.

Please sign the petition, show your support to El Indio, and the Sunday milonga at Plaza Dorrego.

Thanks and abrazos to all of you.

Buenos Aires Milonga Guide & Maps

From someone on Tango-L, here is a great milonga map & guide. Very useful if/when you go to Buenos Aires. When I went on my tango pilgrimage a few years ago, I got a great milonga listing from Sharukh, found a map of Buenos Aires and all the barrios online, and figgered it out for myself. I'm geo-centric, a geophile, whatever the word is - I have to look at a two dimensional pulp based graphical representation of the landscape (aka "a map") wherever I go in order to get my bearings - download the lay of the land so to speak. I'm disoriented in a new place until I get my hands on a map. It must be from my past life as a mountain man.

I love a good segue - even if it's a bit obtuse.

Here is the website with links to maps - norte y sur: [Note that there is other jazz on the website as well - classes/teachers, etc.]

Tango::Milongas in Buenos Aires - Videos

Oleh Kovalchuke in Colorado Springs did a great job of documenting (on video) the various "top" milongas in Buenos Aires. They are great to watch to get a feel for them - if you have never been or are about to go. Here they are....

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Niño Bien ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Salon Canning ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Confiteria Ideal ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : El Beso ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Maipu 444 : Wednesday ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Club Grisel ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : La Viruta ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Cachirulo ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Lo De Celia ::

:: Tango en Mar Del Plata : milonga ::

:: Milongas in Buenos Aires : Plaza Dorrego ::

I would have liked to have seen him do videos of Porteño y Bailarín, La Nacional, and the Buenos Aires Tango Club. I would highly recommend all of those milongas if you are planning a trip to BsAs.

Here is one of Porteño y Bailarín, with Detlef Engel & Melina Sedo [teachers from Germany] doing a milonga demo...I was actually there...sitting right behind the bald guy at the top of the frame (on the right side of the dance floor)...you get a glimpse of him a couple of times...I was sitting against the wall...at Porteño y Bailarín, there are two dance floors...there is one toward the back and around the corner to the left from the dance floor you see in this video...this will at least give you a feel for the room/venue...
