Alejandro Bettinotti Tango Documentary [English subtitles]

From Wikipedia:

Alejandro Bettinotti (July 1019622 May 23, 2022)was an Argentine documentary filmmakersinger-songwritercomposer and pianist.

Biography[edit]

With a thirty-year trajectory in music, he came merging tango, rock and popular music, taking his particular style to hundreds of places in Argentina and the world.

Always with independent and self-managed productions, he edited twelve studio albums, three documentaries and a book.

In 2003, he was summoned, indicated as an innovator within the genre to the Argentina Festival Again, in the city of Barcelona, in Spain, and then toured to the south of that country.

In 2009 he made the script and produced the documentary Entrañas del asfalto, a deep look at the origin of tango and its current contrast with the new forms of the genre.

In 2013, he published his first book Tangos a la deriva, which includes an album as a soloist, poems and texts. In 2014 he presented the book at the International Book Fair and at the Casa Carlos Gardel Museum.

Between 2010 and 2015 he made live presentations at several National Universities in Argentina and abroad such as Greece, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico, (these presentations in Colombia, Greece and Ecuador were declared of Cultural Interest by the Argentine Foreign Ministry, the Argentine National Institute of Music, the Argentine Embassy in Greece and the Argentine Consulate in Guayaquil, Ecuador). Through his artistic work, he generated different debates with the communities of each region. As a result of these meetings, the Documentaries were made: Che, who are you? and University Tours.

He took his particular style to hundreds of places in Argentina, Latin America and the World.

In Argentina, among other stages, he performed at La Trastienda, La Feria Internacional del Libro Buenos Aires, Teatro ND Ateneo, Casa Museo Carlos Gardel, Café Tortoni, Torquato Tasso, Club del Vino, Bar Tuñón, Festival de Tango Independiente Buenos Aires, Café Notorious, Teatro Bauen, Centro Cultural Cooperación.

In the 80s he put together the group Barrio Negro, in the 90s the rock band Señores Monos, in the two thousand the tango duo Bettinotti-Fernández and then his solo career.

He was indicated as one of the exponents of the "hidden tango" current, in the essay that bears that title by the researcher Silvana Boggiano, which deals with a musical current as opposed to the "official tango".4

Con el Tango - The Film

CON EL TANGO – A FILM BY JUDITH ALBRECHT AND URQUIZA TANGO PRODUCTIONS.

THE FILM “CON EL TANGO” TELLS THE STORY OF THE COUPLE CHICHE NÚÑEZ AND ESTER DUARTE AND THEIR SALON URQUIZA IN BERLIN

What happens to self-esteem and dance when you leave your homeland? That’s the question that both of them are asking when they’re looking for a personal home.

Chiche and Ester open the Salon Urquiza in Berlin, where they want to build a home and re-create the Urquiza style. At the same time, both prove themselves as dancers on international stages, they teach, organize milongas, become parents, close the salon, lose and find each other again.

The film accompanies the dance and love couple through their life with the tango. After almost 15 years of recordings, fine work and a lot of travel, we are infinitely proud to be able to present this film to you.

WHAT HAPPENED SO FAR – PRIZES, FILM FESTIVALS AND ALL NEWS ABOUT THE COMPLETION OF THE MOVIE “CON EL TANGO”

Our movie was completed in April 2020. A glamorous premiere was planned for May 2020, which could not take place due to the global situation. We didn’t let ourselves get down: we hit the path of international festivals. The hope to be able to offer a premiere soon remains, as soon as circumstances permit.

The start was in Denmark: the film was presented as the main event as part of the Jewish Culture Festival in the centre of Copenhagen.. After the performance, the protagonists Ester Duarte and Chiche Nunez were interviewed and answered questions from the audience before everyone was invited to a family milonga.

So the film’s journey continued: in March 2021 we received our first prize as best documentary film in the South Film and Arts Academy Festival from Chile. In June, it was an honorable mention at the 2021 ARFF Paris // International Awards in the category Best Documentary Film. And finally, in July 2021, we received the great news from the prestigious Indipendent Film Festival Marina del Rey Film Festival® in Los Angeles, California, that our documentary was awarded best documentary film in a foreign language. What a pleasure to be able to share the laurels with you via Instagram and Facebook!

After about 10 years of filming, 3 years of post-production and a year and a half of limited opportunities for the distribution of independent films, we look to the future with great gratitude and confidence, and we are satisfied with the past. In recent times, the only motivation has often been a strong will to keep moving forward. And now we can present a sincere film, an (hopefully!) Artful statement about tango, expressed through and enriched by the 7th art.

Work continues behind the scenes in order to be able to organize a German, even Berlin premiere in a “real” movie theater. We will be happy to keep you up to date. Yo can sign up for our Newsletter and follow us on Urquiza-Facebook and Instagram.

Tango zu Besuch Documentary

Tango zu Besuch from Irene Schueller on Vimeo.

https://vimeo.com/213944173

Does tango make you happy or lonely? That is unclear. But it is clear that it is addictive. Singles find people who can hug them. Couples find a new crackle. Tango is a great spectacle when you can master it, the dancers are beautifully groomed...

The film: Five young dancers immerse themselves in the sensual and erotic world of tango night after night, far away from their native Argentina – in the Black Forest. All are single. Everyone is addicted to the passionate and melancholic dance. Everyone wants to meet, to merge in a couple, in beauty and elegance. Everyone longs to meet themselves in the embrace of strangers. The eroticism is staged, but the closeness is real./The eroticism is real, but the closeness is staged. This leads to misunderstandings and conflicts that the couple doesn't show to the outside world on the dance floor. How much is play, how much do the rigid gender roles hold the tango captive?

“Visiting Tango” shows the different needs and perspectives and how they affect the small scene. Ruben is happy about the clear distribution of roles, while Susanna is committed to more equality. Christian enjoys the fleeting contacts with women, but Helena is looking for real encounters. Joscha, on the other hand, doesn't want to know anything about interpersonal relationships. He would like to make tango his profession and earn money with it. Lovingly, with lots of music and fine humour, "Tango zu Visit" tells what is happening in the dance halls far away from Buenos Aires. A round milonga leads from the fresh desire to the wistful pain of parting in time lapse through the whole love drama.

After this unusual tango film, you know why five young people are lonely together in a highly aesthetic and touching way.

Joscha wiederum will vom Zwischenmenschlichen nichts wissen.

Tango On A Visit Documentary/Feature Length

Tango on a Visit from Irene Schueller on Vimeo.

52 minutes

From Irene Schueller, visual artist/filmmaker: https://irene-schueller.de/portfolio/tangozubesuch/

A documentary about the desire to get closer to oneself through the embrace with a stranger.

Five young dancers dive into the sensual world of Tango, far from its Argentinian homeland – in the Black Forest. All are single. All submit to the erotic spell of the passionate and melancholic dance. All seek to be joined as one with the ideal partner, and to be admired as well as desired for their beauty, elegance and perfection. All are addicted to the kick, getting high through the embrace of strangers.

The eroticism is staged, but the proximity is real. The perfect tango face masks inner conflict. How does a dancer negotiate the fragile border between playing a rigid gender role and actually becoming that role? “Tango on a Visit” explores the tensions between artifice and reality in this unique subculture. The film’s protagonists represent various aspects of this struggle. Ruben is happy about the clear gender roles, while Susanna would like to have more gender equality. Christian enjoys the ephemeral contacts with women, but Helena, is looking for real encounters. Joscha, in turn, is unconcerned about human relations on the dance floor. He wants to make tango his profession, to make money.

“Tango on a Visit” is an affectionate and at times comedic portal into a subculture that is every bit as brutal as it is beautiful. The tango scene is ruled by a small class of hard core Tangoistas. Wannabes are viewed with arrogance and contempt by the accomplished dancers who practiced years to get where they are and to earn admission into their special society. Nothing is worse than being stuck on the dance floor with a stumbling fool, risking being brought down to the incompetent’s level, while attempting to maintain the dignity and elegance of one’s perfected Tango persona. No one wants to miss out on the dizzying, eroticized kick that a great dance brings, but which is only possible with a partner of equal mastery. At the same time, the arrogance sends a signal for those unworthy dancers to keep away. Is the pain worth it for a great dancer – an “unapproachable one” – returning home alone, after the music has fallen silent?

Happy or unhappy? A round of Milonga leads us through the whole love drama from the fresh desire to the wistful farewell pain. After this Tango film, you know why five young people are lonely together in a highly aesthetic and touching way.

Last Chance Tango :: Short Film Project :: A film about a man who meets the twin of his deceased wife and tries to connect with her by learning tango together

From Sonja Strathern's Kickstarter page:

A film about a man who meets the twin of his deceased wife and tries to connect with her by learning tango together.

Do you have a dance story? Everyone who learns to dance Argentine tango has a backstory. It usually involves an introduction, maybe like falling in love, and then the hard part involving years of work, like a long term relationship. Those who dance Argentine tango often invest in a life-long learning of technique. Tango is danced in an 'embrace' and fulfills a spectrum of emotional needs as well as being social and fun.

I wrote this story about Daniel, a man dealing with a tragedy, who is just keeping it all together in his life. At an event, he sees a woman named Sarah, who strongly resembles his deceased wife. Miraculously, Daniel and Sarah discover she and his wife were twins, adopted to different families. When they see a tango performance, Daniel asks Sarah to learn tango with him, hoping to connect with her and win her love. But things don't always turn out as planned. Will he get his last chance? Tango is not as easy as he thought.

I drew upon personal experience as a tango dancer, with the generosity and help of my local tango community in Eastern Iowa. I began learning tango ten years go in Houston, Texas, and asked my former teacher, Joan Bishop to be my actress to play herself. She volunteered her time and made the visit in February during one of our worst Iowan winters.

For the Love of Tango from Work site on Vimeo.

Filmmaker Susan Kucera captures the story of a blind man’s journey into the intoxicating, complex world of Argentine tango and explores the impact tango has had on the lives of professional tango dancers, teachers, performers, and enthusiasts. In the end, beyond the fancy footwork, beautiful dresses, high heels, and dazzling performances, tango is about discovering of oneself. Shot on location in the United States (Hawai‘i, New York, Seattle, Portland), the Czech Republic, Germany, and Canada, For the Love of Tango reveals how we can communicate with one another beyond all barriers of race, language, age or physical limitations.

From the filmmaker's KickStarter Page (from 2012-2014):

For the Love of Tango..... Through the story of one blind man we explore the intoxicating, exciting and complex world of Argentine Tango. How did a blind person become involved in this dance, how does he navigate the dance floor full of other dancers when he can’t see and how does he asks someone for a dance? By accompanying him on his journey we learn about and experience a whole other world.

We delve into the lives of professional Tango dancers and teachers, including Tango Master: Jorge Torres of Broadway’s: ‘Forever Tango’, world class Tango performers like Natalia Hills & Gabriele Misse, Mayte & Carlos Barrionuevo, international tango teachers like Alex Krebs, Brigitta Winkler, Tony Fan and Ilana Rubin among others, as well as ‘regular people and lovers’ of the dance whose life has changed as a result of being immersed in it.

As Suki Schorer, (she danced with the NYCB under Balanchine 1959-1972. Promoted to principal in 1968 by Balanchine. She joined the faculty of SAB as a full time teacher in 1972. and now holds the Brown Senior Faculty Chair), reminds us: ‘It is an addiction.... but a healthy one.’

Tango challenges everyone who enters into its world from the relationship between the sexes to exploring our limitations; our ability to surrender and let go, to finding confidence and grace in our bodies and minds. It shows how we can communicate with one another beyond all barriers of race, language, age or physical limitations. It is truly a universal language that can inspire and connect us beyond the surface.

In the end we see that beyond the fancy foot work, beautiful dresses, high heels and dazzling performances Tango is....... really about the discovery of oneself.

from the creators:

Life is like a dance - I knew nothing about the Tango, other than what most people know of it if they haven't danced it themselves, dancers in perfect rhythm, legs flashing, alluring costumes, the characters of the professional dancers' persona on stage - but as I entered this journey with a film makers eye, interviewed and edited, I discovered what all the passion is about for those who try to learn the dance themselves. It has all the flavors of life and I could see clearly why my partner, Gawain Bantle loved it to such a degree.

The film is about the inner essence of Tango and it's parallels to what life is - full of joy, frustration, attraction, love, narcism, humility, fear, balance, human interconnectedness, and the mastery of the art of Tango. As in any art, the artist has to bring forth what he or she feels inside balanced with good training in order to do the dance well. You have to know the rules, but then you have to let go and really feel! Life is like a dance, we come together, share special moments, and ultimately part: as the great dancer, Jorge Torres remarks, to dance Tango… to really dance Tango… you must discover yourself.

The film exists because of Gawain Bantle's enthusiasm for the dance and he and I have been on location in several countries and unusual locations doing principle photography for a few years. We've produced the film ourselves shooting it in between other projects. The inimitable dancer Jorge Torres, a true professional and one of the most amazing human beings I have ever met signed on as Executive Producer and together we have worked to finish "For the Love of Tango". With some last minute post-production costs, we're almost there.

Abrazos Imborrables Tango Documentary

Abrazos Imborrables trailer (official) - English version from Soluble Films on Vimeo.

The tango film 'Abrazos Imborrables' will be premiering this Sunday May 6 at 12pm at the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival in Austin (at the Mexican American Cultural Center at 600 Red River St) with director Pablo Hadis in attendance...FREE and OPEN to the public!

Abrazos Imborrables - directed by Pablo Hadis
(Unforgettable Hugs)

A research into the causes of the resurgence of tango in Argentina and its adoption around the world. Contemporary tango legends, including those responsible for the comeback of tango, share their insights and first hand accounts on why tango has returned with such strength to the world stage, in this documentary produced with the collaboration of the Buenos Aires tango scene.

After decades of staying hidden from public view, tango makes a surprise return, spreading to the four corners of the world. Why are so many countries being filled with milongas? Why is youth returning to tango? Why is, in essence, a cultural expression from the late 1800s returning with such strength in the year 2000? What basic needs is it fulfilling, and what does this say about our current global society?
