This is an artistic piece of work made by MonteleoneTango - Video by Leo Aramburu

Video by Leo Arambaru

"This is an artistic piece of work made by MonteleoneTango, who also created the mythical mural of the Canning Salon in Buenos Aires. In this particular case, the picture was specially made for Yanina Freire, who wanted to have a personalized poster at her home.
As everyone can notest, she is the main character of many nights, surrounded by friends, dances and the magic and joy that are always present in the milonga´s atmosphere.
It is a pleasure, for me, having done it. And that's the reason why i'm sharing it with you. Also, because i want to tell you that you can have a personalized image if you want it. Just ask! "Remembranza" de Orquesta Osvaldo Pugliese, Jorge Maciel, Mario Melfi

About the video: it's made by Leo Aramburu.

Tango :: Musicality :: What it "looks" like...to get to what it "feels like"...

We/I seem to always be "talking" about musicality in tango. Let's see what it "looks" like. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a YouTube video must be worth at least ten thousand...

Keep in mind these are professional couples/instructors...and this is "demo" tango, not really what you will see/do on the social dance floor. The point is musicality can be expressed in many ways - small and almost imperceptible on the social dance floor - and contradicting myself here - musicality ultimately is not about what it looks like, but what it feels like.

Chico Frumboli y Eugenia Parrilla :: Rodolfo Biagi's "El Recodo" [short clip]

Murat y Michelle Erdemsel :: Anibal Troilo's "En Esta Tarde Gris"

Los Hermanos Macana :: Francisco Canaro's "Relíquias Porteñas"
Musicality and Humor combined...

Detlef Engel y Melina Sedo :: Canaro's "Milonga Sentimental"

Ney Melo y Jennifer Bratt :: Carlos DiSarli's "Nido Gaucho"

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!
One of the weaknesses of YouTube is that sometimes the audio and video are "de"-synchronized when uploaded and the audio and video do not track properly together. This video is an example of this. I have the original CITA DVD version of this dance, and their musicality is perfect - dead on with the music. It appears to me in this YouTube version that the audio is lagging as much as one or two seconds behind the video.
Ezequiel Farfaro y Milena Plebs :: Alfredo Zitarrosa's Pa'l que se va"

Milonga :: El Flaco y Silvina

Dancing a milonga at Porteño y Bailarín in Buenos Aires...Fransisco Canaro's "Milongon"...

I've had the distinct pleasure of dancing with both of them...Silvina in private lessons in Atlanta...and dancing next to El Flaco (Dany Garcia) at Salon Canning. It's an interesting effect, when you go to BsAs and see the "famous" people - it's like they are movie stars. In addition to El Flaco, I saw Facundo y Kely Posadas, and spent a week learning from Gustavo y Giselle Anne.

Gustavo y Giselle - Back Volcada

This is a video I took at a G&G workshop last summer in Atlanta.

Pay close attention at time stamp 0:43 or so, he leads her in two in a row, one on each side. Notice that his is very much tilting her axis forward toward him - making this a volcada instead of an enganchada. The one to the leader's left side (her left foot behind the right) is really hard for me to lead.

Oscar Casas - The Enganchada/Back Cross/Volcada

The way Oscar explains it, the enganchada (back cross, "hook") is executed in a more upright/vertical position. Tilting her axis forward at the moment of the back cross makes it a volcada. So, it's one thing with her axis vertical, and another when her axis is tilted forward toward the leader.

Mystery solved...mas o menos...

Mine looks like it might be more like milonguero ochos....and needs more work. Note that the clockwise one (on the close side) is fairly easy. The lead of the counter clockwise one requires a more rotational lead/entry (CC) to get her left leg to swing around behind her right.

Thanks for all of your interest and comments!

Tango:: Musicality Nailed - SEE ALL THREE POSTS! TWO MORE BELOW!

Getting the brain going here...another thought is that it (a leader's interpretation of musicality) is also dependent on the dancing level of the follower. Some followers I dance with can't get my traspie ochos - even more can't get the superfast traspie ochos (in milonga) that I do - so I have to dial it all in and be more musical in less complex ways.

And lastly, without making another, separate post - no discussion of musicality can be had without mention of Murat & Michelle Erdemsel. Here is a video of them "nailing" "musicality"...in my humble opinion...

I need some tango bad after all of this...I need it bad...

Per Debbi's comment...here are Murat & Michelle again...dancing to "Re Fa Si" con Orquestra Ben Bogart y los Gatos Azules...

Luciano Mares & Heather Morrow

Aspen's own Heather Morrow dancing an improvisation to the vals "Soñar y nada mas" by Alfredo di Angelis. This was held in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, during a workshop by visiting instructor Luciano Mares [Buenos Aires]. Heather is the teacher/organizer of the Aspen Tango community. The venue is the Masonic Temple in Glenwood Springs. This is where I did most of my dancing...

Luciano is a great guy and a great teacher (very precise and directed in his teaching) - enjoyable classes - if you ever get the opportunity, you should take his classes - or take privates.

Luciano just posted this on YouTube...so here it is...

Ney Melo & Jennifer Bratt - Tango

A tango improvisation by Ney Melo and Jennifer Bratt this summer in Austin, Texas. Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to be there (Austin is my "home" town...my daughter and my family all live in Austin...), but I could not make it...
