I've been without internet access for a few days and was just now checking my email. I received the bad news that he died of a heart attack this morning at age 41. He had a heart attack on 21 Nov and was in intensive care recovering for the past 10 days. He had knee surgery on Oct 17 - I wonder if a blood clot was dislodged or something - to cause the first heart attack. He was fit and trim and healthy. I don't understand it.

I was just thinking about him the other day - that I had not heard from him in a while - and that I needed to touch base with him and see how he was doing.

I'll fill you in on more details as I find out. If you know any details, or if you knew Luciano, please leave a comment.

Very sad news indeed. I need to go cry now.

Luciano has been in the intensive therapy for 10 days and I saw him every day. He was on the breathing system and looked like a sleeping prince: tan, handsome and peaceful. it was impossible to believe he would not make it. There were always a lot of people from the milonga at the hospital, day and night, wishing for the best, sending positive energy. Yet.. He had been reanimated for 40 minutes when his heart stopped. it is way too much for the brain to stay without the oxygen.
Still hard to believe he is not with us...

Thanks Oksana, I know he had knee surgery on Oct 17, but it sounds like he was in the hospital for something else. What happened that he was in intensive care for 10 days?

Correction...it appears that he had a heart attack on Nov 21...and was in intensive care recovering, but died this morning...

I'm still wondering what the circumstances were for the first heart attack...

We're so sorry to hear about Luciano's untimely death. We offer you our sincere condolences and ask you to pass it along to his family and friends, please.
We knew him briefly when he stopped by in New Orleans to visit our milonga escorting a student of ours last year. Next, we saw him in Buenos Aires last April. Very sad and absurd loss indeed.

He was a very bright guy. His English was phenomenally good. He understood idiomatic expressions and cultural references better than most American English speakers. And he was incredibly knowledgeable about US and world politics.

Of all the tango instructors I have met, he was the one I warmed up to the most. He was just fun.

That video was from one of our little Aspen milongas. There were probably only 15 or 20 of us there that night. But Luciano treated with as much energy and focus as he did when performing at the Portland festival. He really was a wonderful man.

I've just returned from BsAs.

This is what I was told by his friends. He had a blood clot on his knee that moved to his heart. he apparently knew about the clot and was working with doctors to resolve it.

I believe he went in for treatment and it dislodged. They worked on him for 40 minutes - but he fell into a coma and never came out.

Let's remember him as he was.

My condolences.

Luciano Mares was a dear friend and a wonderful man. I am still in shock and cannot help but wonder what I will do without him. He has been a major presence in my life since April of 2006 when I first visited BA. he was my first teacher and also my constant companion during both my visits to BA.
He came to my hometown in Baton Rouge, LA to teach our small tango community on a couple of ocassions and I was very lucky to have had in my home as a guest. He was gracious, kind with charm galore. He was handsome and talented and will be missed by everyone here he ever met. I saw him last at my 43rd birthday party; he made it a point to be there for me. It goes without saying je was the main attraction!! There is an album of pictures of my party on my facebook page where there are at least a dozen photos of him if anyone is interested in checking it out.
Lastly, I offer my most sincere condolences to his mother, Laura and Miguel. I would like to think of him in heaven right now dancing with the angels. May the belss him and keep him, May the Lord shine his face upon him.

from Denver, this message:

Luciano went in for knee surgery which he had needed for a long time. While he was recuperating, he got a blood clot in his knee. It dislodged and lodged in his heart, giving him a heart attack. He fell into a coma and was declared braindead last Friday. Monday morning they removed the life support.

Luciano's father died about a year ago and he was an only child so his mother is understandably taking it hard. I spoke to her on Saturday and she is being very stoic about the whole thing.

I am in utter shock. When I was still going out quite a few milongas down here, he was always out. I always enjoyed running into him and dancing with him, and he always had a smile and kind words for me. He was probably one of the few who didn't make moves on me, he just danced. I'm incredibly shocked.

Wow. I am so saddened by this news. It is hard to believe that Luciano is gone. He will be missed not just in Buenos Aires but throughout the tango world. He was such a fun personality at the milongas, but there was also more to him than met the eye - intelligent and dedicated to his teaching.

I am so shocked since I got the news of Lucianos sudden death just two days ago. Due to some health problems and break from Tango I was not up-to-date about him. Although I was wondering why he did not write for a long time.
I am Natalija a tanguera coming from Croatia but living in Germany. I met Luciano last March in B.A and learned a lot from him - especially in Milonga Candombe. He was a great master in this. So I invited him for a tour to Germany and Croatia in Summer 2008. After his tour in US he came to Germany and spent 6 weeks in my house giving several workshops there. Then we went to Croatia (Zagreb and Zadar) where he also gave several workshops and spent some days of there. I know that he had a great time - he liked Europe and was very happy meeting new people and nice places. I am very pleased and happy having met him and having the opportunity to realize all this projects with him. I learned a lot from him. He was so optimistic that he would restart with tango some months after the knee surgery having plans for a Europe tour this year. Nobody could ever imagine that such a routine surgery would end up so tragically. I am so sad and feel sympathy with his mum, Laura and all his closed friends. It is a great loss.
W should allways take each moment as a gift, enjoying people, places and moments. Life is so beautful but sometimes very short. We never know how much time we will have for the trip called life. Luciano's trip was too short.
