I was a homeophobe, but now I'm taking fish oil pills, eating organic spinach, and sweetening my organically beaned coffee with agave nectar...thank you.

Don't worry, the milonguero way is alive and kicking in Buenos Aires. Despite what some chicken-littles say, it is not going to go away anytime soon.
I'll have you know I saw a 12 year old dancing in a very traditional milonga. :-) It made me so happy to see that his father was teaching him so well.

The milonguero way is not so alive and kicking in the Republic of Texas. I see a growing number of dancers enamored by nuevo, and a corresponding influx of nuevo "influenced" teachers...
The thing is, they don't actually teach "nuevo", but teach tango fundamentals like everyone else. What gives me pause is that many of these teachers (leaders) wear baggy pants, and have more of a nuevo style to their dance - almost like a nuevo and milonguero mix.
If this is what the newbies see and experience in workshops and at festivals/performances, then it stands to reason this is what they will think tango "is".
I trust that Buenos Aires will always remain our mecca. Cool story about the little kid. It's good they don't have xBox or Wii or cable TV down there. Here you could never pry a kid away from the boob tube.
Alas they do have all those things down here, but the value of socializing and spending time with family seems to trump all of that needless home entertainment. It's what I love about the people here.
You should have seen this little guy. He was a kid but as soon as he began to lead (always a grown woman), he was a man in every sense of the word. Oh, it just broke my heart it was so sweet. And he was good! Obviously life experience will further his dancing, but so far so good.
